LED/SSL INDUSTRY

Over the last two years the light-emitting diode (LED) industry has made huge advances in "white" light output and energy efficiency.

Industry experts say the LEDs used in Solid State Lighting (SSL) products are now the most energy-efficient lighting source available:

  • LEDs use about 85% less energy and can last over 30 times longer and cost less to use over their lifetime than incandescent bulbs.
  • LEDs use less energy than the typical halogen, Metal Halide, and High Pressure Sodium commercial bulbs and last much longer.
  • LEDs use about 50% less energy and last five times longer than compact fluorescent lights.

A recent U.S. DOE study identifies markets where LEDs are competing with traditional light sources - halogen, fluorescent, neon, and high-intensity discharge (HID); LEDs will save Americans $280 billion in energy costs over the next 20 years (WSJ link).

LED Lamps are good for the environment and good for your health - reducing pollution and cancer risks. Additionally:

  • Contains no hazardous/universal waste (such as Mercury or Lead) and are completely recyclable.
  • Emit no ultraviolet rays – studies now suggest close exposure to CFLs are potential cancer causing – UV rays also cause color changes to fabrics, leather, art, wood, etc.
